COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Artists and organisations have a responsibility to:
• Embed direct community engagement and actively build community around the project
• Centre the rights of the community and collaborators
• Remove barriers to participation and engagement
• Embed community self-determination relating to all participation and input
• Seek relevant cultural permissions and advice
• Embed accessibility and equity in representation
• Meet obligations in the areas of insurance and Workplace Health and Safety
• Define the scope, duration and project roles and responsibilities of the project
• Consider the authorship and intellectual property rights
• Develop a clear social contract with participating community, complemented by best-practice legal obligations with regards to contracts
• Ensure the project is resourced appropriately and timelines and budgets reflect the complex and sometimes costly nature of community engaged practice
• Educate yourself and/or your organisation on the needs and experiences of the community you are engaging
